How to start learning to fly RC Helicopters
With all of the options to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming to try and figure out what you need to get started learning to fly model helicopters.
This article will help you answer that question by showing you a couple of great starting options that we at Midland Helicopters recommend to many people asking us that same question.
What do we recommend to people new to Radio Control Model Helicopter flying?
We find ourselves recommending the latest versions of two very popular models; The OMP M2 and the Blade 230S.
Here are a few key reasons why we suggest these two models:
-
1. Comfortable size helicopter (not too big or too small for learning on).
-
2. Stability mode to aid in learning to fly
-
3. Great spare parts support.
-
4. Can be used to progress your flying after the initial learning stage.
About the models
The OMP M2 Evo MK2
This helicopter is great for beginners and experts alike. It comes pre-built and ready to fly with default settings on the flight controller that are very helpful to beginners (in Stability mode) while also being able to fly 3D in the other flight modes. Easy tuning of the flight controller means the model can be as stable or agile as you want.
The model comes in four colour options, and includes a flight battery with the helicopter.
Items needed to complete:
-
Transmitter
-
Satellite Receiver (if using Spektrum transmitter)
-
LiPo Battery Charger

The Blade 230S Smart
For a more basic learning option, the Blade 230S Smart is a great model. It can be used to learn to fly from the beginning and move on to basic 3D, but stops short of where the OMP option will allow you to go. It uses built-in Spektrum technology for ease of use for Spektrum transmitter users. It comes pre-built and ready to fly with default settings on the flight controller that are very helpful to beginners (in Stability mode) while also being able to fly loops, rolls and gentle 3D flying in the other flight modes.
There are two options for the model. A Bind N Fly Basic (BNF Basic) option, which is just the model supplied on its own, or a Ready To Fly Basic (RTF Basic) option, which is the model and a Spektrum DXE basic transmitter.
Items needed to complete:
-
Spektrum Transmitter (for the BNF Basic option)
-
LiPo Battery Charger
-
Charging Adapter Cable
The bundles shown on the product pages linked below will guide you for starting out with the Ready To Fly choice (RTF Basic) which is supplied with their basic Spektrum DXe transmitter option, and also for the Bind and Fly choice (BNF Basic) with a Spektrum DX6e transmitter, if you prefer to go with a better transmitter that you can move forwards in the hobby with, and easily use with other models.
